Project Estimator

Location: Flexible / prefer Hagerstown MD area, SC, or TX,

Company Overview:
Maccaferri Inc. is a global leader in engineered environmental solutions, specializing in Geometallic and geosynthetic materials for civil engineering and construction applications. With a reputation for innovation, quality, and industry leadership, we focus on delivering high-performance solutions to complex geotechnical challenges.

Position Overview

The Project Estimator is an entry-level sales engineering role responsible for analyzing project drawings and related documents to determine material quantities, match Maccaferri products to the specified or implied application, and identify possible design changes that enhance the value of Maccaferri solutions. Projects are submitted by Maccaferri’s customer network or sales team and require a quick, professional response. The Estimator packages quantity takeoffs, product recommendations, and value-engineering notes and routes them to the appropriate Area Sales Manager for quoting or other commercial action. This position reports to the Solutions Manager and is a developmental path toward managing a sales area or moving into technical marketing / business development calling on specifiers.

Key Responsibilities

Drawing Analysis, Takeoff & Product Matching

  • Review project drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid documents submitted by customers, distributors, and the sales team
  • Perform material quantity takeoffs for relevant Maccaferri product lines and applications
  • Match specified or implied products to the Maccaferri portfolio (equivalent, alternate, or preferred solution)
  • Flag incomplete drawings, missing specifications, or assumptions that affect quantity or product selection
  • Organize takeoff backup so an Area Sales Manager can quote with confidence and an auditor can reconstruct the estimate
  • Maintain a consistent estimating standard and file structure for rapid turnaround and reuse

Value Engineering & Design Recommendations

  • Identify possible design or product changes that improve constructability, performance, cost, or schedule using Maccaferri solutions
  • Prepare clear recommendation notes (what is specified, what is proposed, why it adds value, and what quantities change)
  • Coordinate with the Solutions Manager and technical resources when an application requires engineering judgment beyond a standard takeoff
  • Promote relevant design tools and typical details where they help the customer or specifier adopt the recommended solution
  • Capture repeating application patterns so future estimates are faster and more consistent

Response Speed, Routing & Sales Support

  • Treat inbound estimate requests as time-sensitive commercial work; prioritize for quick response
  • Route completed takeoffs, product matches, and recommendations to the appropriate Area Sales Manager for quoting or other action
  • Do not issue customer pricing or commercial commitments; support the ASM who owns the quote
  • Clarify scope with the requesting salesperson or customer contact when documents are ambiguous—without delaying the file
  • Track request status (received, in process, routed, needs technical review) so Sales always knows where a job stands
  • Support high-level budgetary estimates and value-engineering opportunities as requested by Sales

Learning, Tools & Pipeline Development

  • Build working knowledge of Maccaferri products, typical civil/geotechnical applications, and competitive substitutes
  • Learn company estimating tools, CRM/request logs, and any design software used to support takeoffs and recommendations
  • Maintain accurate records of estimate requests, outcomes, and follow-up in CRM so the Solutions Manager can see workload and win patterns
  • Participate in product training, lunch-and-learns, and selected project reviews to grow toward field or specifier-facing roles
  • Relay market and specification intelligence observed in drawings (recurring competitors, agency language, missed opportunities) to the Solutions Manager and commercial leadership

Team Involvement

Work with the Solutions Manager, Area Sales Managers, technical staff, and customer/distributor network to turn drawings into actionable commercial packages:

  • Supporting sales and customers with fast, documented quantity and product recommendations
  • Routing complete estimate packages to the ASM who will quote or advance the opportunity
  • Escalating non-standard or high-risk applications to the Solutions Manager or technical team
  • Improving estimate quality and cycle time through better templates, assumptions logs, and product matching rules
  • Developing the technical and commercial judgment required for a future sales-area or business-development role

Career Path

This is an entry-level sales engineering position. With demonstrated accuracy, speed, product fluency, and commercial judgment, the Project Estimator is positioned for progression into:

  • Area Sales Manager (territory and distributor-network ownership), or
  • Technical marketing / Business Development calling on specifying engineers and agencies

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline preferred
  • 0–3 years of experience in estimating, drafting/takeoff, construction materials, geosynthetics, or civil infrastructure support; internships and co-ops considered
  • Coursework or experience reading civil, structural, or site drawings and specifications
  • Familiarity with geosynthetic, gabion, MSE, erosion-control, or related geotechnical products is a plus but not required
  • Experience with takeoff software, CAD/PDF markup tools, Excel, and Microsoft Office; CRM familiarity a plus

Skills & Attributes

  • Comfortable reading drawings and converting them into quantities, product lists, and written assumptions
  • Accurate, organized, and fast—able to turn around estimates without sacrificing traceability
  • Curious about how products are applied in the field and why a specifier chose a given system
  • Clear written communication so an ASM can quote from the package without a meeting
  • Collaborative with sales and technical staff; knows when to estimate and when to escalate
  • Professional with customers and distributors when clarifying documents
  • Coachable and career-oriented; treats the role as training for a commercial or specifier-facing path
  • Willing to learn Maccaferri’s product portfolio, typical details, and value-engineering playbook

This is primarily an office- or home-office-based role focused on drawing review, takeoff, and written recommendations. The Project Estimator works on a queue of requests from the customer network and sales team and must manage multiple files at once against short response expectations.
