THE ROLE

You will be working in a multi-disciplinary group, where people with different backgrounds collaborate, each with their own expertise, to support IIT research activity. The Human-Robot Interfaces and Interaction (HRI²) research unit is coordinated by Dr. Arash Ajoudani. We develop intelligent robots that can enable timely, natural, and human-in-command interactions with humans on both cognitive and physical levels, representing the concept of socio-physical interaction. Our multidisciplinary approach spans the theoretical, technical, and practical dimensions of modern collaborative systems.

This position focuses on the design and development of innovative robotic and mechatronic systems, combining advanced mechanical design with sensing, actuation, and control integration. The main goal is to create human-centered robotic platforms that are reliable, ergonomic, and adaptable to real-world applications, enabling intuitive interaction and safe, efficient collaboration with users.

Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Designing, prototyping, and assembling mechanical and mechatronic components for robotic platforms.
  • Supporting the integration of sensors, actuators, and electronic hardware into novel robotic systems.
  • Performing testing, validation, and troubleshooting of robotic and mechatronic prototypes.
  • Collaborating with researchers to translate conceptual designs into functional hardware.
  • Contributing to maintenance, upgrades, and documentation of laboratory equipment and robotic platforms.
  • Supporting experimental setups for robot–human interaction studies.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related discipline.
  • Documented experience in mechanical design, prototyping, or hardware integration.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar).
  • Good knowledge of the English language.
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong focus on stakeholder needs and expectations.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Experience with rapid prototyping technologies (e.g., 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting).
  • Knowledge of electronics, embedded systems, or control hardware for robotics.
  • Familiarity with simulation software (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, ROS-based tools).
  • Ability to work in a challenging and international environment.
  • Capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary setting.
  • Strong problem-solving attitude, analytical reasoning skills, and growth mindset.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

  • A yearly gross salary ranging between 32 and 35K Euros, which may include a bonus option depending on your role and contract
  • Private health care coverage depending on your role and contract
  • Two days of teleworking per week and flexible working hours are available for certain roles
  • Candidate holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree who have not been resident in Italy in the last 3 years and move back to Italy to start any work activity, and meet specific requirements, can benefit from a 50% deduction on their income.

This open position is financed INAIL within the CORE project.
