We value the unique experiences, knowledge, backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives of our people. By embracing diversity, we believe science can achieve its fullest potential.

THE ROLE

You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where junior and senior scientists collaborate, each with their expertise, to carry out a scientific activity with a shared research goal.

The Electron Spectroscopy and Nanoscopy Research Unit is coordinated by Giorgio Divitini, who has extensive experience in Electron Microscopy technique development and applications.

The research focuses on furthering and applying the state of the art in electron microscopy for materials, taking advantage of a recently installed ThermoFisher Spectra 300 S/TEM equipped with an “ultimono” monochromator, capable of an energy resolution better than 30 meV, image and probe correctors, and a Continuum+K3 GIF. The group will also further data analysis using and developing software routines for analysis of large datasets. Research projects span beam-sensitive materials with optoelectronic applications, such as hybrid perovskites, MOFs, and materials for energy in general, as well as systems at the interface between life sciences and materials science. The research line has close collaborations with both EU and non-EU world-leading groups.

Within the research team, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Use of Electron Microscopes (including an aberration corrected TF Spectra 300 S/TEM) to develop new approaches for 1) advanced acquisition routines for STEM, 2) diffraction-based imaging of beam sensitive materials, including 2D materials, 3) analysis of materials for optoelectronics, such as semiconductor nanocrystals and hybrid perovskites
  • Data analysis and preparation of scientific outputs

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A PhD in Physics, Materials Science or similar disciplines
  • Documented experience in developing TEM techniques
  • A strong publication record
  • The ability to properly report, organise and publish research data
  • Good command of spoken and written English
  • Strong publication record

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Experience on advanced electron microscopy, including techniques such advanced electron diffraction, mono-EELS, automated / programmable EM data acquisition
  • Coding skills for EM
  • Knowledge of software for EM data analysis, particularly open source toolkits such as Hyperspy, py4DSTEM etc.
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong problem solving attitude
  • High motivation to learn
  • Spirit of innovation and creativity
  • Good in time and priority management
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

  • A yearly gross salary ranging between 35000 and 40000
  • Private health care coverage
  • Candidates from abroad or Italian citizens who have carried scientific research activity permanently abroad and meet specific requirements, may be entitled to a deduction from taxable income of up to 90% from 6 to 13 years.

Please submit your application using the online form and including a detailed CV, university transcripts, cover letter, and contact details of 2 references.

Application’s deadline: 15.08.2025
