THE ROLE

You’d be working within the Data Science and Computation Facility at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT).  The Data Science and Computation Facility supports Institute scientists with high-performance computing and data analysis. It manages the 'Franklin' supercomputer, which includes around 100 CPU and GPU nodes, and helps with code compilation, execution, optimization, queue management, and software containerization. The facility uses a cloud-HPC approach to efficiently manage multiple computing clusters.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced System Engineer. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in designing, implementing, and maintaining system architectures for complex projects. You will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our systems, working closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative projects in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Your main responsibilities will be:

1.    System Monitoring and Support: monitoring system performance and availability, responding to alerts and ensuring systems are running smoothly.

2.    Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution: assisting in diagnosing and resolving technical issues, providing first-level support to internal teams and escalating when necessary.

3.    Software Build and Deployment: supporting the build and deployment process of software updates, ensuring successful implementation and minimizing downtime.

4.    Documentation and Reporting: maintaining accurate documentation of system changes, incidents, and resolutions, and assisting in creating reports for ongoing system health.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Strong Knowledge of Linux OS and the related programming environments.
  • Familiarity with network configuration, security, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with container technologies (e.g. Docker).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve system issues.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Knowledge/Experience on OpenStack.
  • Expertise in automation tools and scripting for system administration (e.g. Ansible).
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams to integrate and optimize systems.
  • Good in time and priority management.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
  • Good communication skills in English.
