Project: TERNA ETCM074901
Commitment & contract: TECHNICIAN, 22 months
Location: Genova
WHO WE ARE
At IIT we work enthusiastically to develop human-centered Science and Technology to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times and transfer these technologies to the production system and society. Our Genoa headquarters are strictly inter-connected with the other 11 centres around Italy and two outstations based in the US for a truly interdisciplinary experience.
YOUR TEAM
You will be working in a multi-disciplinary group, where researchers from a range of scientific and engineering backgrounds collaborate to create novel solutions to key problems in robotics.
The Advanced Robotics Research Line, directed by Prof Darwin Caldwell, focuses on an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to robot design and control, and the development of novel robotic components and technologies for applications in robotic dexterous manipulators, telepresence and teleoperation, industrial automation, inspection robotics. The candidate will collaborate in the design, construction and test of a prototype mobile robot equipped with long reach robotic arm, customized end effectors and reconfigurable structure.
The candidate will join the RAIN (Robotic Automation INspection lab) that is part of Advanced Robotics (https://advr.iit.it/rain). The focus of RAIN is to develop robots to be used in inspection task or automation. Thanks to a multi-disciplinary background, including physics, computer science, robotics, mechatronics, electronics, and the strong collaboration with the other research lines of IIT, we can deliver robots specifically designed for the application. Our method consists of developing prototypes from the idea to the advanced demonstrator. We take care of the mechanical design, electronics, sensors development and integration, control software and data analysis and visualization. Our technology transfer activities adapt the most advanced and innovative solution to bring life to the idea. Depending on the project requirements, our prototypes usually reach a TRL up to 6/7, ranging from feasibility study to a full demonstration in a real scenario, to a prototype ready to be industrialized.
The development of inspection robots has opened up numerous scenarios in various applications: from surveillance to search and rescue operation to industrial maintenance. The capability of the robot to operate in hazardous environments and in presence of radiological, biological and chemical hazards (autonomously or teleoperated) has enormous benefit in term of safety for the human workers.
A step forward in this scenario will be the development of customized system able to access hard to reach places, move along complex path, or manhole entrance.
